HOT TOAST MISSION

Hot toast music company collaborates with kids to create the ultimate mixtape for growing up. As adults, we have music to go along with everything we feel and do, and kids should too! Through thoughtful lyrics and catchy melodies, Mr. Symon explores the world around and the world within. No subject is too grand or too silly. No idea is too small or insignificant. If it sparks a child’s imagination or piques their curiosity, then it’s a song waiting to be written. Hot Toast is music that celebrates childhood and encourages everyone to join in the magic of learning.

MEET MR. SYMON

Symon Hajjar is a Tulsa based dad, educator, and musician who writes irresistible kids' music, all with purpose. Hajjar, or Mr. Symon as his students call him, draws inspiration from the wonder of childhood and the power of music to inspire, teach, and connect a community. In his first classes as a music teacher at local Reggio Emilia preschool, B’nai Emunah, Symon was taken in by how quickly even the youngest children remembered the lyrics to songs.  A lightbulb went off! Put to music, everything was an opportunity for learning and connection. Now, whether he’s teaching, working with his kids in the garden, unraveling the complexities of the human experience, or swapping dinosaur facts with a four-year-old, he always has a song for the occasion. Combine catchy melodies and clever lyrics with DIY instruments so everyone can play along and next thing you know you’ve got… HOT TOAST!

HOT TOAST VALUES

Kids aren't simple

Kids have big feelings and impulses and opinions…just like grown ups. But they haven’t learned what to do with all of these complex invisible aspects of being a person just yet. We want to write songs that will encourage kids to not be scared of their inner world and to give them tools for better understanding themselves and regulating their emotions.

Kids aren't simple

Music is for everyone

We believe that who YOU are matters and that all the details that make each of us unique are worth singing and talking about. We also believe in making room for each other and our different ways of seeing the world. Kids are experts at this kind of generosity, so we want our songs to reflect it too. Making music doesn’t have to be fancy or a big production. Sitting on your kitchen floor and tapping a pan with your toddler totally counts! We are big believers in using what’s around to make homemade instruments. When kids make something themselves, they connect with it.

Music is for everyone

The little stuff is the big stuff

We believe that our childhood experiences have a lasting influence on how we approach life as an adult. From the moment we enter this world, we are learning. Even our earliest observations and interactions begin to form the building blocks of our future ethics, self esteem and development. For us, “Kids Music” is singing about the things that matter most when it comes to being a person. It’s discovering the kindness and confidence and playfulness and wonder that we will build on for the rest of our lives.

The little stuff is the big stuff

Kids are capable

We believe that even the youngest children are whole people capable of constructing their own learning, thinking deeply, and having amazing ideas. Hot Toast is here to create a musical environment that awakens their innate curiosity and narrates their journey of discovery. DIY instrument creations, songwriting collaborations, genuine interactions, and immersive provocations all play an important role in Hot Toast programming.

Music is everywhere

We want children to see themselves as mystically musical beings. From the cadence of ocean waves and the drone of a cicada’s buzz to the beating of our own hearts and the movement of our breath, we all participate in a world of rhythmic patterns and captivating sounds. Even the tiniest babies contribute to this worldwide song, kicking in the womb as they follow along. Whether we are making a carrot into a flute, up-cycling an old garden hose into a French horn, or making up a song to the tempo of our pulse, Hot Toast connects kids to the music in and around them.

Music is everywhere

Learning is an experience

We believe in the power of integrating a mixture of concepts, interests, learning styles, and skills within the same shared experience. Music is the perfect vehicle for this kind of cross-curricular learning. We love to wrap metaphors in melodies, sometimes mashing up topics that wouldn’t otherwise go together. Clouds can help us identify our emotions, gardening teaches us about growing up, and prairie dogs show us what a community looks like. Every song we make is the product of something a child was interested in and attempts to tether abstract ideas to tangible ones. Mr. Rogers said that “for children, play is serious learning”, so we take their ideas seriously and consider it quite an honor to be be a part of their adventures.
